What is Evony?
Evony (formerly known as Civony) is a massive multiplayer online real-time strategy (MMORTS) game which lets you build and run a kingdom, forge an alliance, win battles against enemies, and bring your kingdom to glory.
How Do I Play?
- Go to their website: http://www.evony.com.
- Register for an account.
- You will start with a Town Hall.
- Perform the in-game Tutorial laid upon as quests.
At the start of the game, the player will be focused on raising up the population. This will greatly help in raising the tax collection. While raising up your population, you will be able to finish a quest or two so be sure to check up your Quest journal from time-to-time.
This game is free-to-play (F2P) but also gives the player the option to purchase in-game advantages through buying coins using real money.
Observations:
- The game has nice graphics.
- There is an underlying city laws and government economy--having such things as Civil Code, Plowshare rates, and Advanced Tax Policies, to name a few, in order to help you in-game. (It reminds me of being a Mayor in Sim City.)
- The Beginner Chat room won't be so much of a help for beginners. I noticed that a lot of beginners try to post their questions but not much or almost nothing is being noticed or answered. This is maybe because a lot of players are talking at the same time and many players spam the "cheat/resource/amount" text (or the questions are just ignored).
- For Beginners, it is recommended and better to follow the in-game Tutorial incorporated in Quests.
- Cheat/gold/1000? If you see some lines or similar like these from the text chat (and I am sure you will see gazillion of these from many players), do not bother typing them. There is no such thing as cheats in Evony (that's what I heard from a long-time player). Cheating will get you banned.
Some Tips:
- You sometimes have to Levy some resources from your people in order to cope up with the fast-growing needs of your city. In turn, this results to a decrease in Loyalty. Try Comforting (like Praying) your people after a Levy to bring up Loyalty. A Levy and a Comforting gesture has a 15-minute cooldown for each.
- You can change your city name after every 24 hours through the option: Town Hall - City Rename.
- Use the Free Speed-up option for Buildings (including Upgrades, excluding Recruiting) with starting construction time of 5 minutes or less. Longer pre-construction time than 5 minutes will require you some coins for speed-ups.
- One building/activity is allowed at a time so choose which construction you should do wisely.
- Do not forget to open your gifts. They are at the top left corner.
There has been a lot of posts flooding the Internet about the advertisement of Evony and their spam tactics. Honestly, the reason why I even tried checking out and playing the game is because I saw it from a lot of web pages (yes, ads), with a beautiful girl's face posing in-front. I thought it is like WoW and I could be a warrior or elf mage or something. I got curious (and I think that's UMGE's point). Anyway, here are some blogs and articles that I have found.

Some gives it nice reviews, some say do not play it. It is up to you. After all, your game-fun meter is what matters. It is undeniable that Evony has become appealing and popular, like Travian and Ikariam, to strategy gamers. You be the judge and remember to have fun! :)
